Summer cold coffee drinks you can make at home

Summer is well and truly underway with temperatures set to soar again and what better way to cool down than by enjoying a delicious cold coffee. While that might be true coffee beverages aren’t cheap, especially if you want to enjoy your favourite cold coffee drink on a fairly regular basis.

There are a lot of cold coffee recipes out there that you can play around with whether you prefer a simple iced latte or want to get creative with frappe-style blends. Keep reading to see some examples of our favourite cold coffee drinks and how you can try them for yourself at home.

Classic iced latte

We mentioned it briefly above and with good reason – it remains one of the most popular iced drinks in most coffee shops. With the added benefit of being straightforward to make at home too.

Ingredients

All you need to make a delicious, iced coffee at home is:

  • Coffee – strong filtered coffee or espresso made in a coffee machine
  • Ice
  • Milk – you can use your preferred milk; you don’t need top of the line ‘barista edition’ plant-based milk because it’s not going to be steamed.

Method

To prepare your iced coffee you first need to add your ice to a good-size glass and pour milk (normal or plant-based) until the glass is around three-quarters full. Then top up your glass with freshly brewed coffee and stir. If you prefer a flavoured coffee, you can also add any syrups as desired too.

Strawberry and white chocolate mocha frappe

For those with a sweet tooth looking for a bit more of an adventurous summer treat then this fun and fruity frappe could be the perfect fit for you. Don’t forget to use the highest quality mocha coffee beans from Pumphreys to create a smooth, flavourful espresso.

Ingredients

  • Coffee – shot of espresso from a coffee machine
  • 125ml milk, normal or plant-based
  • Ice
  • 1 scoop vanilla powder
  • 30ml white chocolate sauce
  • 1 pump strawberry syrup

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Coffee machine

Method

First add ice to your glass and pour milk into your glass until it’s roughly two-thirds full. Next pour the contents of the glass into your blender along with the other ingredients and blend until smooth. Use white chocolate and a strawberry to garnish the glass and pour in your blended mixture. You can also add whipped cream if you want to make your cold coffee a bit more indulgent.

Cold brew

Even though a cold brew has typically been more of an American beverage it has started to creep up in popularity in the UK too. If you love a strong coffee flavour and want to stay fresh and energised on a long summer’s day, a cold brew will tick all those boxes and then some.

Ingredients

  • Ground coffee – suitable to be used in a cafetiere

Equipment

  • Cafetiere

Method

In order to create a strong cold brew like how it’s traditionally prepared, add one part coffee and five parts water to your cafetiere. Then leave it to brew overnight to ensure as much of the coffee flavour is extracted as possible. You can then serve the cold brew straight from your cafetiere and add ice to finish.

Types of popular summer coffee drinks

Nitro coffee

Nitro is a type of cold coffee that is created by infusing nitrogen into the coffee. The result is a coffee with a creamy, nitro beer-like texture, and a smooth mouthfeel. This beverage is another example of one that is largely popular in the US but has started to make its way over to the UK through big chains like Starbucks.

Frappuccino

Frappuccinos are very versatile coffee drinks that can be made in a wide range of flavours such as vanilla, mocha, and caramel to name just a few examples. They are prepared by blending coffee with ice and milk (with or without espresso) and one of the most popular cold coffee drinks to make at home due to how straightforward they are to make and the customisation you can create with the flavours.
