Ipanema Yellow Catuai Pulped Natural Brazilian Coffee
Ipanema coffee is a single origin Brazilian coffee that is grown in Ipanema, Brazil.
The name of this coffee comes from the region in which it is grown. The varietal of coffee that have been cultivated and finally the production method that is used to process this coffee.
Taste
Ipanema coffee Brazil has buttery, milk chocolate tones and strong nutty flavours. It has a low acidity and is slightly citric but its bite comes towards the finish. This coffee is pulped and dried using the honey method, a specific process that provides a high quality, full bodied, creamy and thick velvety body.
Origin
Ipanema, Brazil has been producing coffee since 1969. Stretching over 4500 hectares the area is composed of five main farms, all of which are located in the Sul de Minas region of Brazil.
Of this land, 70% of it is devoted entirely to coffee growing and production; the rest of the area is dedicated to conservation initiatives. The people of Ipanema use this conservation land to cultivate sustainable Eucalyptus trees, which are grown to ensure that they have a natural fuel source available for the coffee drying process.
Unsurprisingly, Ipanema is one of the largest employers in the area and offers around 2,000 jobs during the peak harvest time, in addition to its 300 regular jobs. The workers enjoy many benefits such as free distribution of soy milk, food staples, a medical plan, transportation and lodging.
Ingredients
These Ipanema coffee beans are called Catuai, which refers to a Hybrid created in the 1950’s of Mundo Novo and Caturra. The aim was to create a coffee that would grow relatively short with lateral branches forming close angles with the primary branches. Thus ensuring that the fruit rarely falls from the tree. This is favourable when weather conditions can be changeable.
Recommended preparation
We would recommend that you use this coffee through a V60 Filter, Chemex or Aeropress. These brewing methods really help to bring out all of the sweet, buttery cup characteristics.
For use in a V60, use 18g of coffee to 300ml of water and don’t forget to let your coffee bloom!
Heritage
In November 2012, the Ipanema Yellow Catuai Pulped Natural started off as a standard ‘coffee of the month’. Pumphreys Coffee received only 2 sacks of 70kg, which fulfilled our coffee subscriptions and stocked our retail outlets. The aim of our Coffee of the Month is to give our customers an opportunity to try micro lots of coffee that are not widely available elsewhere. Loved by customers and Pumphrey’s baristas alike, it has now become a firm favourite and will continue to be stocked in our range.
