Roasted Figs are used as an ingredient as a coffee substitute or a roast coffee additive. From about the end of the 19th century fig started to come into use a substitute in southern Germany. The Coffee/Fig mixture is often called 'Viennese Coffee'. The flavour of roasted figs is specific due to their high sugar content they are still sweet but at the same time perhaps as a result of caramelisation slightly bitter. Add around 15% to coffee thicken and sweeten.

Fig seeds - Roasted and ground.
My father used to buy Blue Danube coffee, now sadly unavailable that had an amazing flavour, which derived from the figs included in the mix. It is the flavour you get when abroad in Austria.
This has enabled me to recreate that flavour.

Fig
Adds a subtle taste to coffee. A little goes a long way. Very pleased to obtain this as it's not widely sold.

It's more about the colour than the flavour
I like to add just a little soasted fig to my coffee. Initially to smooth the flavour of poorer quality coffee. I now use a much better quality coffee (Maragogype) but still use the fig as it makes the coffee look much darker and richer; they do say that sight enhances flavour.
