Coffee Storage - FAQs:
Why is proper coffee storage important?
Proper coffee storage is important for preserving the coffee bean’s freshness, flavour, and aroma. Coffee beans can be degraded by air, moisture, heat, and light. By using airtight, opaque containers and storing your coffee in a cool, dark place, you can maintain the quality of your coffee beans, by slowing down oxidation and preventing staleness. Proper storage helps your coffee retain its rich taste and optimal brewing potential for longer.
How long can coffee beans stay fresh in storage?
When coffee beans are stored properly, in an airtight, opaque container at room temperature, they can stay fresh for up to 6 months. Proper storage includes keeping your beans in a cool, dark place away from heat, light, and strong odours to preserve their flavour and aroma. Avoid exposing the coffee beans to air as this can degrade their quality too.
Can I store coffee beans in the fridge or freezer?
We do not recommend storing your coffee beans in the fridge or freezer, as it's not the ideal method for maintaining freshness. Freezing your coffee beans may lead to moisture build up if not sealed tightly, which can degrade your coffee beans. If you do need to freeze them, we recommend portioning your coffee beans into smaller bags to avoid repeatedly exposing them to moisture. For the best results, store coffee in a cool, dry place, in an airtight container, away from heat and light.
Does the coffee storage container material matter?
Yes, the key for preserving coffee beans is the material of the containers. Food-safe, non-reactive materials like stainless steel, ceramic, or UV-protected glass are ideal as they prevent exposure to air, block light, and protect from odours and moisture. Stainless steel and ceramic are durable, while UV-protected glass can be a stylish choice that still protects against light damage. Choosing the right material ensures your coffee keeps its flavour, freshness, and aroma.
Should I grind coffee before storing it?
We don’t recommend grinding before storing it. Once coffee is ground, it can quickly lose its freshness and flavour due to increased exposure to air. Grinding releases oils and aromas that are important for its rich taste, once exposed, this starts to degrade. We recommend grinding your coffee just before brewing, to preserve the full flavour and ensure each up is as fresh as possible.
