Gayo Sesongot is from the Sumatra Bebeson region – produced by Aulia Kahfi at Rakyat farm and local farmers where he collects cherries by using an old van or a friend’s car. Being in coffee production since his early teens Aulia has expanded his business by building a micro supply chain across his community encouraging quality and experimentation. Ripe cherries are hand-picked, soaked in clean water for two days, then spread on patios to dry. They are raked regularly to promote even drying, which takes approximately 12–15 days. Almost all farms in Sumatra are small, on average farms are between 0.5 – 2.5 hectares, coffee is usually the primary crop but most also intercrop their trees alongside vegetables, maize and fruit. Sesongot is named after a caterpillar native to Gayo which is commonly found amongst the coffee trees.
