A Winning Move: Pumphreys Coffee Takes Its Place on MONOPOLY Newcastle & Gateshead Edition
A brand-new official MONOPOLY: Newcastle and Gateshead Edition game has launched today, celebrating over 30 local landmarks and organisations, with Pumphreys Coffee proudly taking its place on a RED SPACE! This special edition features our very own historic North East coffee institution, Pumphreys Coffee, bringing a taste of Newcastle’s rich coffee heritage to the world’s most iconic board game.
The board, unveiled this morning at The Utilita Arena, sees bespoke property spaces and customised cards designed to reflect the vibrancy and history of Newcastle and Gateshead. At the event, Mr. Monopoly revealed a giant version of the board, with iconic Tyne Bridge occupying the top square—a fitting tribute to the area's cultural landmarks.
Founded in 1750, Pumphreys Coffee has been a cornerstone of Newcastle’s coffee scene for nearly three centuries, sourcing and roasting the finest beans and embodying the North East’s proud traditions.
“Our roots in Newcastle go back to 1750, and being featured on this MONOPOLY board is a fantastic recognition of our journey,”
says Stuart Lee Archer, Director of Pumphreys Coffee.
“As a family-run business with a passion for quality, we’re honoured to join the ranks of Newcastle’s celebrated establishments.”
When it was announced that the Newcastle and Gateshead area would be getting its own 2024 MONOPOLY edition, the public eagerly nominated local icons for a chance to be featured.
“We were wonderfully spoilt for choice,”
shares John Keen-Tomlinson from Winning Moves UK, the board’s makers.
The board captures Newcastle and Gateshead’s essence, featuring landmarks from St James’ Park to Grey’s Monument and including notable charities like The Alan Shearer Foundation and Newcastle Dogs & Cat Shelter. Each space is grouped by themes such as heritage, shopping, leisure, and the arts, ensuring a meaningful tribute to the city.
Pumphreys Coffee’s inclusion not only celebrates our history but brings our legacy into homes and conversations across the region.
“Seeing Pumphreys on the board is a tribute to the generations of coffee lovers who have made us part of their daily ritual,”
says Stuart Lee Archer.
“We look forward to seeing families roll the dice and land on our space, knowing they’re engaging with a true piece of Newcastle’s story.”
With such a rich legacy, Pumphreys Coffee is thrilled to represent the North East’s coffee tradition on MONOPOLY’s Newcastle and Gateshead board, continuing our dedication to community, quality, and heritage—one roll of the dice at a time.
The game will be available to purchase at the Pumphreys Coffee Showroom in Blaydon, Our Grainger Market Shop and online very soon, just in time for Christmas.
