How Is Tea Decaffeinated?
There are several methods used to decaffeinate tea:
· Water Process (Swiss Water Process): Tea leaves are soaked in water to extract caffeine, and the water is then filtered to remove the caffeine. This method preserves more of the tea's natural flavors.
· Carbon Dioxide Method: Involves using pressurized carbon dioxide to extract caffeine from the tea leaves, leaving the flavor compounds mostly intact.
· Solvent-Based Methods: In this method, tea leaves are treated with solvents (often ethyl acetate or methylene chloride) to extract the caffeine. This method is less commonly used today due to concerns over chemical residues.
