Clarke Farm, a 1500-acre farm located in Katambale, Uganda is an eco-friendly coffee estate that mainly grows Robusta under a shade canopy. The founder Dr Ian Clarke is focused on investing in the people and the community of Uganda, the agricultural sector in Uganda supports 80% of the population. Firstly he is running a commercial hub farm with coffee processing facilities, the farm provides employment for around 600 people which the vast majority of is local men and woman who are also subsistence farmers. The second area of focus is Arabica from the foothills of Rwenzori, the regions high altitudes provide ideal growing conditions. By planting indigenous tress, Clarke farm ensures 30% shade coverage which promotes biodiversity while tackling deforestation.
The coffee is produced using the washed method known locally as WUGAR. Cherries are grown by out pickers and brought to Clarke Farm for processing after an initial floatation to remove the under ripe cherries. The beans are then fermented in water overnight before being dried on raised beds. Finessing is done in an eco-drier to ensure precise moisture control.
