The Green land coffee plantation located in Pyin Oo Lwin (previously Maymyo) was founded by U Sai Maing in 1999 after selling his rubber plantation. It is one of Myanmar’s largest coffee farms starting with 30 acres and now 580,000 coffee trees are grown on 450 acres.Once picked the cherries are immediately separated from the beans and hand sorted to remove defects. The beans are then cleaned before being laid out on small raised beds under the sun, these beds are attended to 5 times a day to ensure even drying. Once they are dried the cherries are hulled at a nearby dry mill then graded and prepared for export. Shade is too heavy to produce the great quality beans in some areas of the farm an rust has already started in the older trees, these areas are the focus for the future of the farm. On average 1area produces about 300kg of green coffee, however one of the shade trees, macadamia also produces a valuable crop.
